Bug - The mark or icon that accompanies the text of a logo. The Nike swoosh is a "bug mark" while the at&t globe is an "iconic bug". It's not an emblem or a crest - they are types of bugs. So why call it a bug? Because"parasite" sounds even worse. Just think that the word mark is the whole and the real meat of a logo and the bug hovers around it in some way.

CMYK - The standard colors for print. Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black (K). Most printers need files made in this color mode. All electronic screen devices use RGB colors.

Design Modes - The following are the 3 levels of design service I perform on a project based on the budget:

  • Lookin' Good -This only applies to print and web projects. It means that I will only provide two design options at the first review. If they're both rejected then a third is produced. For websites, one revise to the selected design is made before coding. For print, we can have three revises if needed.
  • Tasty - Multiple designs are posted at the first review. They may be a little rough at times but this a longer process meant to find the best solution. 6 revise rounds are the max before the final is agreed on. For something like a logo there would be 8 original selections at first review. Perhaps 1 or 2 new options if needed for the next review along with any requested revisions to favored originals.
  • Hot Damn - 10 to 14 logos, 5 to 7 posters, 4 to 7 ads or 6 to 9 web designs will be made for the first review. If they're all tossed out I'll go the distance of posting 4 to 6 new designs the next time (this only happened once on an ad). We basically just keep at it until everyone is on board with the design. I will at times bring in other professionals to review and critique the work designs and general thought process.

FTP - File Transfer Protocol. This is way files are accessed and controlled on a server.

RGB - Red, Green and Blue, the colors of light. When you mix them all at full intensity you get white. This is the color space for screens. Print uses CMYK to mimic RGB though new color pigments and digital printing are getting closer to creating the full spectrum of true colors, RGB.

Word Mark - Logo design term referring to the text of a logo as artwork.
